Brooklyn Center police arrested Lucas Peterzen, 20; Aaron Peterzen, 21; and Anthony Finocchiaro, 20; for criminal trespassing and burglary at around 2 a.m. July 19.
Investigators say they were on the rooftop when they triggered an alarm. Officers from a number of agencies responded and formed a perimeter around the complex.
A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter used heat-seeking technology to locate the men near an air conditioning vent. The suspects eventually crawled down the side piping of the building and surrendered.
"Obviously our biggest concern with these types of situations is what we see here and also in the metro is the scrap burglaries where people are taking copper," said Commander Tim Gannon of the Brooklyn Center Police Department. "And in this situation, that building had been burglarized in the past and had copper taken from the air conditioning vents. In those situations, the criminals get very little money for that copper that they take out."
Gannon says the cost to replace those air conditioning units could be up to $20,000. As for the three suspects, they claimed to be on the rooftop just "for the fun of it," so the investigation is still ongoing.
